Lawrence Halprin ( born Lawrence Halprin , 07/07/1916, New York , USA - 10/25/2009, New York , USA ) is an American landscape architect and teacher of Belarusian- Jewish origin.

Biography

Lawrence Halprin grew up in Brooklyn , New York , in a Jewish family [3] of Samuel Halprin and Rose Luria (her parents Philip (Passover) Luria and Rebekah Isaacson were born Radoshkovich ). He spent three years as a teenager in a kibbutz in Palestine . He received a bachelor 's degree in natural sciences from Cornell University. In 1935 he returned to the United States to continue his studies at Harvard Graduate School of Design under the leadership of Walter Gropius , Marcel Breuer and landscape architect Christopher Tunnard.

On September 19, 1940, he married Anna Schumann, born in 1920 [4] .

In 1944, he was called up to the US Navy , and he was sent to the destroyer Morris in the Pacific Ocean . His ship was attacked by a kamikaze . As one of the survivors, he was sent on vacation to San Francisco . And he began to study under the landscape architect Thomas Dolliver Church ( English Thomas Dolliver Church ). After graduating, he opened his own company, 1949. Since 1976, he worked in partnership with a partner, Sue Yung Li Ikeda.

Family

Lawrence's wife Anna Halprin (Schumann) was one of the founders of the American avant-garde in modern dance. Lawrence and Anna had two daughters: Daria (1948) and Rana (1951). Daria Halprin Khaligi works in the field of art, and Rana Halprin is a marriage counselor [4] .
