Biography
Ludwig is the second son of Duke Christian Ludwig II and his wife, Princess Gustav Carolina , the youngest daughter of Duke Adolf Friedrich II of Mecklenburg and his first wife Maria Mecklenburg-Gustrowskaya .
After the death of his father on May 30, 1756, the elder brother Friedrich came to power in Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Since Frederick had no children, Ludwig was appointed Crown Prince, and subsequently the son of Ludwig, Friedrich Franz I, ascended the throne in Mecklenburg-Schwerin . Ludwig and his wife are known as patrons of fine arts.
On May 13, 1755 in Schwerin, Crown Prince Ludwig married Princess Charlotte Sophia (1731-1810), the eldest daughter of six children, Duke Franz Joasias Saxen-Coburg-Saalfeldsky and his wife Princess Anne Sophia of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt . Two children were born in the marriage:
- Frederick Franz I (1756–1837), married to Princess Louise of Saxe-Gotha (1756–1808)
- Sophia Frederick (1758–1794), married to Prince Frederick of Denmark
Crown Prince Ludwig died on September 12, 1778 in Schwerin and was buried in the Schwerin church of St. Nicholas .
