The river begins in the hilly part of the state of Manipur , receives many tributaries (Gumti, Hourah, Kagni, Senai Buri, Hari Mangal, Kakrai, Kurulia, Balujhuri, Shonaichari, Durduria) and flows west, passing in the south-west of Manipur to the state of Mizoram . In Mizorama, it flows west, then turns north and enters Assam , where in the area of Lakhypur it turns west and out onto the plain. In Assam, it flows west to the city of Silchar , where the Madhura River flows into it, and to the border with Bangladesh , where it is divided into two branches: northern ( Surma ) and southern ( Kushiyara ).
