In total, 10 thousand Baranov rifles were produced. Formally, the rifles of the Baranov system were replaced in 1870 by rifles of the Berdan system , but in fact they continued to be used until the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878.

Description
The rifle was remade from muzzle-loading infantry rifles of the sample of 1856.
The barrel had four rifling.
During the alteration, a receiver was formed from the breech of the native trunk and the chamber was unfolded, a shutter was put (together with an extractor it was pivotally connected to a sleeve soldered to the front of the box) and a modified trigger. The box , as well as the appliance (accessories) remained the same. At the same time, the resulting savings made it possible to quickly rearm the army.
The Baranov rifle had a reclining bolt according to the system of the Italian officer A. Albini (in itself a former imitation of the earlier Austrian Wenzl system ) and an external trigger , together with the lock borrowed from the rifle arr. 1856 year.
When the trigger is pulled , the trigger , pushing the striker pivotally connected to it through the breech into the bolt, provides a reliable grip thereof with the barrel, at the end of the stroke hit the hammer , which broke the capsule. When the shutter was opened, the sleeve was pushed slightly back by the extractor, and it had to be removed manually.
Ammunition Used
The cartridge consisted of a brass sleeve , a Berdan capsule and a six-line lead Mignier bullet .
