Nathan, Ernesto

Nathan was born in London in 1848 in the family of Sarah Levy and Mayer Moses Nathan, of Jewish descent and, accordingly, British and German citizenship. His father died when Ernesto was 14 years old.

He spent his youth in Florence , Lugano , Milan and Sardinia , where he was hired as the manager of a cotton mill. During these years, he was fascinated by the revolutionary ideas of Giuseppe Mazzini , and in 1870, at 25, he moved to Rome as administrator of La Roma del Popolo. His home in Rome became the center of Italian political debate, and for a long time he was visited by such prominent figures as Jesy Carducci and Francesco Crispi . Nine years later, he became a member of the left wing of the parliament from the Crispi party, and in 1888 , he received Italian citizenship ^[3] .

In April 1889, Nathan was elected to the city council of Rome. In 1907 he was elected mayor of Rome. He was mayor of Rome for 6 years, until 1913 ^[3] .

He became the first mayor of Rome, who did not belong to the landowning elite, which always controlled the politics of the city. He had the conviction that secular and ethical politics were of undoubted importance. Nathan tried to regulate as much as possible the construction programs that erupted throughout the city after Rome became the capital of Italy in 1871 . In addition, he sought to promote a secular education system, while education in Rome still prevailed in Catholic educational institutions. He opened more than 150 kindergartens - an impressive number, which can be noted in comparison with the fact that today Rome has only 288 such kindergartens. On the day of the 40th anniversary of the capture of the “Gate of Pius” in 1910, the situation escalated, which led to extremely high tension between the anticlerical Nathan and the Holy See ^{[4] [5]} .

As for public works, Nathan discovered: a monument in honor of the first king of the united Italy, Victor Emmanuel II , the Palace of Justice, archaeological work on the Aventine and Celius hills, and the National Stadium (the current Flaminio Stadium), the first modern buildings of Rome for sports events. The Public Transport Network (ATAC) was established in 1911 , as well as the City Energy Company (ACEA), in 1912 ^[4] .

He made a great contribution to the arrangement of Rome, for the first time creating, as new companies that served the city, managing its infrastructure, new cultural and historical objects were opened, an unprecedented social program was launched, which led to an improvement in the social situation and served to promote education ^{[4] [6]} .

He died on April 9, 1921, was buried in the cemetery of Campo Verano in Rome.

Participation in Italian Freemasonry

In 1887, he became a freemason after passing initiation into one of the boxes of the "Great East of Italy." In 1893, he affiliated with the Propaganda Due box ^[7] . In 1896 he was elected to the post of great master of the "Great East of Italy", replacing Adriano Lemmy on this post ^[8] . He remained in the post of the great master for 8 years, until 1904, when he was replaced by Etorre Ferrari ^[9] .

Ernesto Nathan was once again elected to the post of great master in 1917 , and remained in office for two years, until 1919 ^[10] .
