- January 1 - Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II issued a decree that effectively negated the rights of provincial states in the Austrian Netherlands . The decree supplementing it was issued on March 12 [1] .
- January 11 - William Herschel opens the satellites of Uranus - Titania and Oberon .
- February 27 - Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II issued a decree transferring control of the finances of Hungary to the Austrian government [1] .
