Biography and creativity
Vladimir Nazor was born on May 30, 1876 in the town of Postira on the island of Brac .
He studied at the University of Graz and Zagreb .
In the years 1898-1931 the teacher.
During the Second World War on December 30, 1941, Nazor became a member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts according to a government decree [1] , but in 1942 he escaped from Zagreb with poet Ivan Goran Kovacic in a boat on the Kupa River - this flight is reflected in his poem “Boat on the Coupe” (Čamac na Kupi) - and joined the Yugoslav partisans. Vladimir Nazor - an active participant in the people's liberation war of the peoples of Yugoslavia 1941 - 45, in 1943 he was elected the first chairman of the Land Anti-Fascist National Liberation Council of Croatia , since 1945 - Chairman of the Presidium of the National Sabor of Croatia.
In the poetry collections Slavic Legends (Slavenske legende, 1900 ), Zivana (Živana, 1902), Croatian Kings (Hrvatski kraljevi, 1912 ), New Songs (Nove pjesme, 1912), in the poem Bear Donnik (Medvjed Brundo, 1915 ), collection "Istrian stories" (Istarske priče, 1913 ) The survey, using the imagery and symbolism of ancient Slavic history and mythology, asserted the greatness of Slavs.
From the prose works of Nazora, memories are devoted to: "Stories from childhood" (Priče iz djetinjstva, 1924 ), the collection "Tales from the island, from the city and the mountains" (Priče s ostrva, iz grada i sa planine, 1927 ).
The anti-fascist struggle is dedicated to the historical-allegorical novel “Pastor Loda” (Pastir Loda, 1938–46, the story “Partizanka Mara” (Partizanka Mara, 1946 ), the diary “With Partisans” (S partizanima, 1945 ).
In general, the work of Nazora, covering a significant period in time of the 1st half of the 20th century, consists of more than 500 poems and belongs to outstanding phenomena of Croatian literature; the style of the writer varied from romanticism , avant-garde and modern to social realism .
Vladimir Nazor spoke several languages and translated from Italian, German, French, English ( Divine Comedy by Dante , Goethe , Hugo , Shakespeare , etc.).
He died on June 19, 1949 in Zagreb, and was buried on Mirogoye [2] . Since 1959, the highest state award in the field of arts in Croatia has been named in honor of Vladimir Nazora.
Works of Nazora were also actively translated into Hungarian , Italian , Russian .
