Biography
Very little is known about Egilbald. Medieval chronicles report that he was born in Frisia and since childhood was intended for church life. Respected by the clergy and residents of Utrecht for their exceptional modesty, piety, righteousness and mercy, he was elected by them in 899 , after the death of Bishop Adalbold I , head of the Utrecht diocese . The only document in modern Egilbald in which he is mentioned is the charter confirmed by King of Lorraine Zwentibold on the release by the bishop of two serves belonging to Utrecht Cathedral .
The medieval obituaries of the Utrecht diocese date the death of Bishop Egilbald on September 25, 900. St. Radbod became his successor at the Utrecht department .
