The events of the series take place in Utah, where an older version of the Doctor dies at the hands of a man in a spacesuit. Amy, River and Rory, hiding this from the earlier version of the Doctor, are trying to find out who killed him and why. The episode continues the story arch of the fifth season, at the same time being the first in the story arch about the death of the Doctor. Silence first appears in the series, allusions to which were during the entire fifth season. According to Moffat, he planned to create even more frightening opponents of the Doctor, able to compete even with the Crying Angels. The shooting took place in the United States, in Utah in November 2010. The plot of the series appeared on the Internet after a press show a few days before the broadcast. In the UK, 8.86 million people watched the episode; he received positive reviews from the press and a high rating index of 88%.

Story

Prequel

March 25, 2011 on the official website of Doctor Who , a short scene became available - a prequel to the first series. The scene shows an unknown American president (presumably Richard Nixon ), who is called on the personal line to the Oval Office , and the little girl’s voice begs him to turn around, warning that “there is something behind him.” The president refuses and the call ends. Then an unknown alien appears, standing on the right hand of the president.

Key Events

Two months after the Doctor left Amy and Rory at home, they receive blue envelopes with the date and coordinates. The coordinates bring them to Utah , where River Song arrives, who also received an envelope, and the Doctor himself, who is already 1103 years old (about 200 years more than it was during their last meeting). During a picnic on the lake, the Doctor says that he intends to take them into "space in 1969." Amy sees an unknown figure aside, but forgets about it as soon as she looks away. Later, a man in a spacesuit comes out of the lake, the Doctor orders his friends to stay in place and not interfere, no matter what happens. After a short conversation, the “astronaut” shoots the Doctor: the first shot kills him and he starts to regenerate, the second shot catches him in the process of regeneration when his body is already dead, and the Doctor dies completely before he can recover. An old man appears on the shore, calling himself Canton Everett Delaware III, showing a similar blue envelope and holding out a can of gasoline. The Doctor’s body is burned on the lake, and the old man says goodbye and says that they will still meet with him, but he will not.

At Amy's Cafe, Rory and River notice that the envelopes are numbered and one envelope is missing. On the next table, they notice another envelope, and the Doctor comes out of the toilet, 200 years younger than the murdered one. He says that he also received an envelope and does not know who the sender is and why they are here. Despite Amy's protests, River convinces her that you can’t tell the Doctor who sent the envelopes and that they saw his death. Amy still manages to convince the Doctor to take their word for it, set off in 1969 and track down Canton Everett Delaware III. The TARDIS lands in the Oval Office, where President Richard Nixon talks with former FBI agent Delaware about the strange phone calls he receives from a little girl, no matter where he is. The doctor quickly gains the trust of Delaware and convinces him to give him time to look for the girl.

While the Doctor is working, Amy in the restroom encounters a figure she noticed on the lake. She understands that an alien who calls himself Silence can only be remembered when you see him and takes his picture using his mobile phone. However, leaving the restroom, she forgets both the alien and the picture. Meanwhile, the Doctor finds the girl’s location - Cape Canaveral , Florida , intersection of Jefferson , Adams and Hamilton Streets. Together with Amy, Rory, River and the amazed Canton Delaware, they go there on the TARDIS.

They search the building and find a spacesuit with an alien life support technology introduced into it. The river and Rory check the found network of underground tunnels, where many individuals of Silence have been hiding for hundreds of years, but forget about them as soon as they look away. They find a room similar to the TARDIS in their functions, but do not know that they are surrounded by Silence. Meanwhile, Delaware hears the girl's screams and goes there. Amy and the Doctor follow him and Amy admits to the Doctor that she is pregnant. They find Delaware unconscious, and a man in a spacesuit comes out of the corridor. The visor rises and they see a little girl inside, but Amy notices it too late and, thinking that she is changing the story and saving the Doctor’s life, grabs the Delaware gun and shoots the astronaut.
