Biography

Theodor Aufrecht was born on January 7, 1822 in the city of Lesnice (currently part of the Opole Voivodeship , Strzelec County , Poland ).

He received his primary education in Upper Silesia , where he attended a gymnasium. Since 1843 he moved to the capital of Germany, the city of Berlin, where he devoted himself entirely to the study of comparative linguistics and Sanskrit .

In 1850, Theodor Aufrecht became a privat-docent at the Humboldt University , and in 1852 he went to England to get acquainted with the Sanskrit monuments there. At Oxford, he was tasked with compiling a catalog for the Sanskrit department in the local library; at the end of this work, in 1862 he was invited to the University of Edinburgh to the newly opened Department of Comparative Linguistics and Sanskrit.

In 1875, he occupied the same department at the University of Bonn . Traveling through Denmark , Norway and Sweden , he became closely acquainted with the languages ​​of the Scandinavian north.

Together with F. F. A. Kuhn, he founded: “Zeitschrift für vergleichende Sprachforschung”, where many of his most valuable articles were published. In addition, she posted her essays in the Zeitschrift der Deutschen Morgenländischen Gesellschaft and in the Philological Journal [3] .

Theodor Aufrecht died on April 3, 1907 in the city of Bonn.
