Etymology
There are several versions of the origin of hydronym Con.
An ethnographer Pavel Yakobi in his book “Vyatichi of the Oryol Province” substantiated Finnish origin:
In the Oryol district there is the river Tson (birth father: Tsona and Tsna); I set this name above in connection with the name of two Mordovian rivers named Tsna, and the third Finnish river of the Vyshnevolotsk system. But in the Scribal Book of Oryol district at the very end of the XVI century. The river Tson was called Otsna, i.e. belonging to the Oka, or a derivative form from the Oka <...> and having lost its head O, Otsna turned to Tson and Tsna, the name of several rivers of the Finnish region.
In fact, there are two forms of writing the name of the river Tson in the Script Books of the Oryol uyezd of the XVI century : “on Otsne” [2] and “for Otsnom” [3] , from which it can be concluded that in the XVI century the river could be called Otson .
Nevertheless, the name Tson is close to the Tsna hydronym, which is popular in western Russia, which may have originated from the all-Slavic hydronym Desna . The river Tson, as well as all the rivers referred to as the Tsna and Desna, is a right ( other Russian version - “right”) tributary when moving from the mouth to the source (currently the concept of “left” and “right” tributaries is considered from source to mouth). Based on this naming convention for tributaries, it can be assumed that the name of the river Tson comes from the Hydronym Desna directly or through the Hydronym Tsna.
There are also examples of folk etymology , linking the name of the river with the name of the murderer of Count Kamensky Otson Ivanovich, and the words Dream , Miraculous . [four]
