Short Biography
Charles Horton Peck was born in 1833 in Sand Lake , New York. He studied at the New York State Pedagogical College, (now the University of New York at Albany ), then - at Union College in Schenectady , where he received a bachelor 's degree ( BA ). He attended classes of Jonathan Pearson in chemistry , mathematics and botany. In 1859, Peck began teaching mathematics, botany, and Latin and Ancient Greek at Sand Lake Institute. In 1861, Peck married Mary Catherine Slater. In the same year he received a master's degree in humanities (MA). After the death of his wife, in November 1912 and at the beginning of 1913 he experienced two strokes , after which he resigned, adopted only two years later.
Peck was a member of the Botanical Society of America , the American Association for the Advancement of Science , the National Geographic Society , the Botanical Club of Torrey and other scientific societies. He described over 2,500 North American species of mushrooms.
