Armored cruisers of the Linder type (IPA: [liˈændər] [2] - Leander ) - a series of armored cruisers of the 2nd class of the British Royal Navy , built in the 1880s . XIX century. They were a development of the type “ Iris ” ( English Iris ). They became the first British cruisers to receive an armored deck with bevels. A total of 4 units were built: Linder ( English Leander ), Arethusa ( English Arethusa ), Phaeton ( English Phaeton ), Amphion ( English Amphion ). Their further development was the River cruiser.

Design
The project continued the line of British class 2 cruisers launched by the Iris . The main differences from the prototype were: a steel armored deck, which completely covered the engine and boiler compartment from above and for the first time received bevels along the sides, advanced cars and a sharply increased cruising range.
