Henderson the hermit [1] ( lat. Vini stepheni ) is a bird from the genus Lori hermits ( Vini ) of the subfamily Lori ( Loriinae ) of the parrot family ( Psittacidae ).

Description
Body length 18 cm, weight 42–55 g [2] . The general color of the plumage is red-green, with the exception of the golden-yellow tip of the tail, red plumage on the lower body and cheeks and dark purple in the central part of the abdomen. Eyes are golden yellow. The voice is a piercing screech.
Henderson's Hermit Lory lives on the fringes of forests and in coconut palms on the beaches. It feeds on nectar, pollen and fruits of various plants. Arthropods, including Lepidoptera larvae, also form part of the diet.
Guard Status
The range of Henderson's Hermit Lory covers only Henderson Island in the Pitcairn Archipelago. In 1987, the total population of the species was 720-1820 individuals, in 1992 - about 200 pairs. The main threats are rats brought to the island, avian diseases such as malaria and smallpox . Growing exotic plant species can also negatively affect population size.
Henderson's Hermit Lory is included in CITES Appendix II.
