Abel Parker Upsher ( eng. Abel Parker Upshur ; June 17, 1790 - February 28, 1844) - American politician, judge, lawyer. He took an active part in the politics of the state of Virginia [1] , and also served as Minister of the United States Naval Forces and Secretary of State . Apsher played an important role in the negotiations on a secret treaty that led to the annexation of Texas by the United States and its acceptance into the union. He was among six people killed by an explosion aboard the warship USS Princeton .

Biography
Upsher was born in Northampton County, Virginia [2] [3] [4] , in the family of Littleton Upsher and Anna Parker [2] . He was one of twelve children [2] . His father, loyal to the Federalist Party , was the owner of the plantation [5] and a member of the Legislative Assembly of Virginia and a captain during the Anglo-American War [2] .
Upsher studied at Yale and Princeton Universities [3] [5] , but was expelled for participating in a student uprising [2] [5] . After he left for Richmond , Virginia to study law. In 1810, Upsher was admitted to the bar, but soon after his father died, he returned to Virginia, where he became involved in legal practice [3] .
On February 26, 1817, Abel Upsher married Elizabeth Dennis, who died in childbirth in October 1817. [4] In 1824, he married Elizabeth Ann Brown, who bore him a daughter [4] .
Career
In 1812 Upsher was elected to the Chamber of Deputies of Virginia. In October 1841, he became the 13th Secretary of the United States Navy . His term was marked by a strong focus on the reform and restructuring of the fleet, as well as on its expansion and modernization [6] . Under Apsher, the fleet allocation increased, the construction of new sailing and steam ships began, and the US Naval Observatory and Hydrographic Service were established [6] .
In 1843, President Tyler appointed Upsher US Secretary of State . In this position, he achieved the annexation of Texas and was an active supporter of attracting " Oregon land " to the union [7] .
Death
On February 28, 1844, Absher and several other high-ranking officials died in a bomb blast on the USS Princeton steamer while sailing on the Potomac River [7] . He was buried in the Cemetery of Congress in Washington .
