Biography
Born in 1938 in the village of Boskovice (population about 10,000) in the South Moravian Region . He studied at the Prague Technical University, where in 1961 he received a degree. From 1961 to 1967 he worked as an aircraft engineer in Prague and Bratislava . 1967 was a turning point: in the Dominican monastery in Krakow , an exhibition of works accumulated over the previous years is organized, and Koudelka is recognized as a professional photographer. The 10-year “gypsy period” is coming, thanks to which Joseph became famous. The result of this period was the book "Gypsies" (1975)
On August 21, 1968, the end of the Prague Spring was captured, when tanks of the Warsaw Treaty member states appeared on the streets of Prague . At this time, he was noticed by an employee of the famous Magnum photo agency Jan Berry, who was struck by the fearlessness of the photographer. Since 1971, he has become an employee of Magnum, where he collaborates with Henri Cartier-Bresson and with whom they will later become close friends. In 1980 he moved to France and received French citizenship. In 1994, he took part in the filming of Theo Angelopoulos 's film "The Look of Wiliss . " And until now, Joseph Koudelka remains an acting photographer who travels to different countries and displays their reality.
