History

The prerequisites for the construction of the railway line arose in the second half of the 19th century; after the opening of the St. Petersburg - Moscow railway line in 1851 in Central Russia, the construction of railways began. At the same time, the Upper Volga region was poorly covered by rail, while Rybinsk was actually the last (upper) point of movement of barges along the Volga ; above the Rybinsk Volga was not navigable, and the cargo had to be transferred from barges to punts with low speed and carrying capacity for further rafting up the Volga [2] . In 1868, 4 options were considered for building a railway connecting Petersburg with Rybinsk: directly, through Bologoye - Bezhetsk, through Osechenka - Bezhetsk and through Tver - Bezhetsk [3] .

To build a new line in 1869, the Rybinsk-Bologovskaya Railway joint-stock company was established (later the Moscow-Vindavo-Rybinsk Railway ), and in 1870-1871. The 298-kilometer line that passed through the city of Bezhetsk was built. A steam depot was built at Savelino station (now Sonkovo ), and water towers were constructed at Rybinsk, Volga, Rodionovo, Savelino, Viktorovo, Maksatikha, Brusovo, Udomlya, Msta stations to supply water to the locomotives. The working movement of trains began in May 1870, and on June 12 a line of 12 stations, 167 bridges and 191 crossings was adopted by the state commission [3] .
