Ouargla

Warghla [1] ( Arabic: ورقلة , Varkla [2] ) is a city in the north of central Algeria, the administrative center of the same province and district [3] . Some residents speak the Ouargla language . The population is 140,000. (estimated by 2005) [4] .

Geography

The city is located in the northern part of the Sahara desert , on the banks of a dried reservoir whose bottom is covered with a layer of salt [5] . The climate is arid. The distance to the city of Gardai is 180 km (to the west), to Tuggurt - 165 (to the northeast) [4] .

History

The city was founded at the beginning of the 10th century by Ibadite Muslims . In 1012, Ouargla was captured by the Sunnis , the bulk of the population was forced to flee to Mzab , and the city was inhabited by Berbers and immigrants from Black Africa [4] [5] . In the 16th century, Ouargla, like a significant part of the territory of modern Algeria, came under the rule of the Ottoman Empire . In the 1830s, the Turks lost power over these lands, but already in 1872 the city ​​was captured by the French [4] . The modern city was actually built by 1928 around the French fort [5] . Since 1962, Ouargla has been part of independent Algeria.

Economics

The well-being of modern Ouargla is based on oil and natural gas produced south of the city. Also, local residents are engaged in cattle breeding and the production of wool carpets [4] .

Transport

The city has an airport . In March 2018, a tram was launched in Ouargla [6] .
