This work was a kind of break in the series of films by Kitano, a characteristic feature of which was a distinctive crime story about the yakuza . Instead of the life of bandits and murderers, the film tells a moving story about a deaf-mute garbage man (the role of Kurodo Maki ), determined to learn to surf at any cost.
Music
The film was the first collaboration between Kitano and composer Jo Hisaishi , widely known for the soundtracks for a number of anime cartoons by animated director Hayao Miyazaki , including Nausicaa of the Valley of the Winds . After successfully working on “Scenes by the Sea,” Hisaisi became the author of music for all subsequent Kitano films shot before Zatoichi .
