In 1966, she began to study medicine at the Humboldt University in Berlin, which she graduated in 1972 with a diploma in medicine. In 1980, she received a doctorate in medicine. In 1981, she joined the East German Christian Democratic Union .
April 5, 1990 was elected chairman of the People’s Chamber of the GDR , and since the State Council of the GDR was abolished, the last head of the GDR . After the unification of Germany, she served as Minister for Special Affairs in the government of Helmut Kohl in 1990-1991. She later served as parliamentary secretary to the Ministry of Health in 1991-1998. After the Social Democrats came to power, she remained a deputy of the Bundestag , which she left in 2002.
