Rail transport in Paraguay - railway lines and companies in the territory of the Republic of Paraguay .
Work on the creation of roads in the country initiated in 1854 by the first president of Paraguay, Carlos Antonio Lopez . They were invited to the country by a group of engineers from the UK . They had to design a road that would connect the capital Asuncion and the city of Paraguari ( Paraguari department ). In 1856, work began on clearing the route of the future line, rails , wagons and locomotives were ordered.
The railway infrastructure is managed by Ferrocarriles del Paraguay SA, established in 2002.
On the railways in Paraguay, a gauge of 1,435 mm is used . The total length of roads - 971 km, of which 441 km with a width of 1,435 mm, 60 kilometers with a gauge of 1000 mm .
There is a railway connection with Argentina (the gauge is the same), and with Brazil (the gauge transition is 1000 mm).
