The strait was discovered in July 1822 by William Parry and this caused great interest in connection with the long and unsuccessful search for the Northwest Passage . Parry's path was blocked by heavy ice, but ground reconnaissance confirmed that the strait leads to open water. Parry named the strait in honor of his ships - Fury and Hekla. Joseph Bernier attempted to cross the strait in 1911, but was also stopped by heavy ice [1] .
