Originally from the island of Nanumea . In 1999, he received a law degree from the University of the South Pacific . In the early 2000s, he received a master 's degree in international management from the University of Northern Territory ( Australia ). In May 1993, he entered the service of the Tuvalu police , subsequently becoming a commissioner [1] .

In 2006, he was elected from the island of Nanumea to the parliament of Tuvalu [2] . In the government of the Prime Minister, Apisaya Ielemiah took the post of Minister of the Interior [3] [4] .

After the 2010 parliamentary elections , he retained his seat in parliament and was again appointed Minister of the Interior, but already in the cabinet of Prime Minister Maatia Toaf [5] . During his tenure, Telavi paid great attention to the development of the country's remote islands, believing that in the past the central government was more concerned with national development than with the development of the islands themselves [6] .

In December 2010, he joined the opposition. Thanks to his vote, on December 21, 2010, she managed to pass a vote of no confidence in Toaf: 8 out of 15 members of parliament voted for the resignation of the government [7] .

December 24, 2010 was elected the new Prime Minister of the country [8] .

Under the premiership, Telavi Tuvalu became one of the founders of the Polynesian group of leaders in November 2011: regional groups intend to cooperate on a number of issues, including culture and language, education, responding to climate change, as well as trade and investment, and are preparing political and international consultants economic programs for adapting the state to the world modern system.

Actively developing relations with Abkhazia, Russia and the European Union. Tuvalu is a member of the UN and a member of the council of the countries of the British Commonwealth.

On August 1, 2013, the Prime Minister of Tuvalu, Willy Telavi, was ousted from power by Governor General Jacob Italeli . Enele Sopoaga was appointed Acting Prime Minister [9] .
