Biography
Born in Chipping Norton (England), educated at Bristol and London universities . In 1950−1951 he worked at the University of London, in 1951−1952 - at Harvard University (USA), in 1953−1955 - at the Cavendish Laboratory of Cambridge University, in 1955−1957 - at Mount Wilson and Mount Palomar Observatories , in 1957− 1962 - at the University of Chicago , from 1962-1978 - at the University of California at San Diego (since 1963 - professor). Since 1978 he worked at the Kitt Peak National Observatory (from 1978−1984 - director). Editor of the annual reviews of the (since 1974).
He worked with his wife, E.M. Burbridge . The main works of the Burbridge spouses relate to nuclear astrophysics , the theory of the internal structure and evolution of stars , and the physics of galaxies and quasars . Together with W. A. Fowler and F. Hoyle (1955−1957) they carried out fundamental research on the formation of heavy elements during nuclear reactions in the bowels of stars [1] . In a large series of works devoted to galaxies , they studied their chemical and stellar composition, rotation, for the first time determined the masses of many galaxies, and studied unusual galaxies in which explosive processes occur. In the 1960s, one of the first to start studying quasars , obtained the spectra of many quasars and measured the redshift of the spectral lines in them. A number of works relate to the theory of radiation of radio galaxies , quasars, pulsars .
