Etymology
The name of the river "Zhraka" and its variants known by historical documents, "Zhora" and "Zheravka" are based on an outdated hydronymic meaning: "devour" sources. The Word about Igor’s regiment says “the Stugna river: I’m having a thin stream, devouring alien streams”. The archaization of this meaning of the verb “eat” has led to the appearance of a large number of toponymic legends around the name that are not related to real etymology [3] .
According to one legend, the Batu army crossed the river in the area of the modern Mikhailovsky district . Crossing the river was not easy - the river was very turbulent, deep, with strong breakers and whirlpools . The army nevertheless crossed the river, but many Mongol warriors died, including the son of Batu. Batu was very angry at this river, grieving, and then said: “ This damned river devoured my son. So let her name now be: "Zhraka"! ". [four]
Historic Settlements on the Shore
The formation of the most ancient city of the Ryazan principality - Mikhailov , which defended the southern borders of Russia, is connected with the history of the Zhraki river. It was built in 1137 by Prince Rurik Rostislavovich . The traces of the three fortifications built at that time have survived to this day. One is located on the steep bank of the Zhraki River, near the village of Poyarkovo , the other - at the confluence of the Lubyanka River into the Zhraka River, the third - on the banks of the Prony River. The city of Mikhailov has come a long way from a reliable city - a fortress to a quiet county town .
