Of the survivors, Lehits are classified as Poles , Kashubians , Slavs, and Slovinians who speak Lehitic languages .

The ethnic name "Lehita" has traditionally been associated with the name of the mythical progenitor of the Poles - Lech . This name for the designation of the entire Polish people was first introduced around 1200 by the Polish chronicler Krakow Bishop Vincenti .

According to the currently accepted point of view, the etymology of the words “lehits” and “ Lyakh (Leh)” is reduced to the word “land (* lęd)” ( wasteland , uncultivated field), another source indicates that the common word “lyakh” is based on the common noun “ lech ”, from ancient times found in all almost Slavic dialects with the meaning of a furrow , ridge , field and the like [2] . In other languages, this name was modified according to phonetic laws: “Lendizi” - in the list of tribes of the geographer of Bavaria, “Lendzeninoi” - in the name of Konstantin Bagryanorodny , “ Poles ” - in ancient Russian chronicles. It denoted as privileged " Lenjians ", who dominated until the middle of the tenth century. among the Polish tribes, and others, apparently, related tribes to them. At the end of the 10th century the principality of the Polyans arose, from which the name “Poles” arose. [3]
