Biography

Born in the Ternovaya settlement of Volchansky district of the Kharkov province in a priest's family, he graduated from the historical and philological university of Kharkov University , where he was one of the last students of Alexander Potebni . Over the following years, he taught Russian at the university and other educational institutions of Kharkov, simultaneously studying folklore and customs. Continuing to develop the ideas of Potebnya, he carried out a study of children's lullabies, conspiracies and charms of different nations, trying to analyze them not only as a philologist, but also as an ethnopsychologist - an innovative approach at that time. [1] . Alexey Vetukhov also belongs to one of the first scientific attempts to consider the Ukrainian and Russian dialects of Slobozhanshchina , to describe their features and interaction with each other. In the 1900s, Aleksey Vetukhov was close to the right-wing forces of Kharkov and collaborated with the publishing house Peace Work. During the Civil War and the occupation of Kharkov by VSYUR , Aleksey Vetukhov was elected to the Kharkov City Duma on the list of non-partisans. In feb. 1917 in Kharkov, the 25th anniversary of V.'s pedagogical and scientific activity was widely celebrated, in connection with which he received numerous congratulations from colleagues and students. In the 1920s Vetukhov headed the Ethnology and Local History Section of the Kharkov Research Department of the History of Ukrainian Culture (established in 1921 under the supervision of Academician D. I. Bagaley); taught at the Kharkov Institute of Public Education (KhINO) a new course "Ethnography – Ethnology"; He was in charge of the preparation of local historians; He advocated the creation of a science that would establish a link between ethnography, ethnology and local history. Vetukhov was a member of the committee set up to publish the works of Potebni, and continued to promote his legacy in his works. In January 1921, a Scientific Society was created at KhINO, in which Vetukhov participated with N.F. Sumtsov, D.I. Bagaley, M.V. Dovnar-Zapolsky, E.G. Kagarov, A.I. Beletsky and other scientists. Together with D.K. Zelenin and L.A. Bulakhovsky V. was a member of the commission on applied linguistics, created in March 1924 at the research department of linguistics KhINO to develop methods for teaching the mother tongue in schools. The meetings of the commission were open and took place in the presence of school teachers. In 1922, Vetukhov was arrested by the GPU, he was supposed to be deported to the Arkhangelsk region, but he was released as a result of the intercession of his colleagues. Despite scientific and pedagogical merits, Vetukhov was denied the assignment of a scientific title in the amount of published works. Only on February 17, 1941, he received a notice from the Academy of Sciences that he was being granted a personal pension.
