Herkus Mantas ( Lit. Herkus Mantas , lat. Henricus Montemin , in Polish and German - Herkus Monte ;? - 1273) - the leader of the Prussian tribe of natang during the II Prussian uprising in 1260-1744.

In his youth, he was held hostage by the Crusaders, was educated in Magdeburg . After the defeat of the Teutonic Order at the Battle of Durbe led the uprising.
On January 22, 1261, he defeated the Crusaders at the Battle of Pocarmine. In 1262 he was wounded when he was captured by the Knights of the Order of Konigsberg .
In 1263, in the battle of Lubawa, the crusader army led by the landmaster of the Order Helmrich von Würzburg ( Helemrich von Wirzeburch ), who was killed in battle , defeated.
It is believed that Herkus was executed by the Crusaders in 1273 , there are different versions of the causes and places of this event. [one]

The drama of the Lithuanian playwright Juozas Grushas ( 1957 ) [2] was made about Herkus Mantas [2] and the film of the same name was shot at the Lithuanian film studio ( 1972 ) [3] .
The main street of Klaipeda is named after Herkus Mantas. A monument to him (sculptor Vytautas Macyuyka) with a statue of 4 m in height was erected on it in 1983. [4]
The streets of Herkus Mantas are in Vilnius ( Šnipiškės district) and in the village of Saugos in the Silute region . [five]
