Born March 9, 1795 in the city of Romanov in a large merchant family.

After home education and education Putilov in 1809 entered the position of a commission agent for one farmer in Moscow and in 1812 he spent 10 days in captivity with the French. Escape from captivity led him to Rostov , where he took the same place as in Moscow.

Only in 1816 did Alexander Putilov succeed in fulfilling his cherished desire - to leave the world and begin a monastic life. On January 15, 1816, he dressed in a novice dress and settled in the Roslavl forests of the Smolensk province , where on February 2, 1820, he became a monk with the name Anthony and lived for five years.

In June 1821 he moved to the monastery of Optina Desert, in which he took an active part.

On August 24, 1823, Anthony was ordained a hierodeacon , in 1825 he was appointed head of the monastery and in 1827 he was ordained a hieromonk . The fourteen-year rule of him was for Optina Skete a time of dispensation and a solid foundation, both externally and spiritually, and the beginning of its prosperity. For 18 years he worked in a monastery, setting an example for everyone with his industriousness and tirelessness.

December 3, 1839 Anthony was appointed abbot of the Maloyaroslavets Chernoostrovsky Nicholas Monastery . Here it fell to him to establish and affirm the internal structure of the monastery in the spirit of faith and piety, according to the rules of experienced ascetics and modeled on the best Russian monasteries. By the advice, instruction and power of his prayer, Anthony attracted quite a few.

Diseases forced Anthony to repeatedly ask for dismissal, but only in 1853 he received the desired. On February 9, 1853, he transferred control to his successor and retired to the desert Optina.

On March 9, 1865, he accepted the schema and stopped accepting worldly faces. He died on August 7 of the same year and was buried in the Kazan Cathedral of Optina Desert.

In 1996, Anthony of Optina was glorified as a locally revered saint in the Cathedral of Optina Elders . At the Council of Bishops in 2000 he was canonized for general church veneration.
