Life and work
Mimnerm lived in a turbulent time when the Ionian cities of Asia Minor fought against the growing strength of the Lydian kings. Several fragments of his poems that have survived to this day (from the epic poem Smirneida, also written by the distichs) describe this struggle. The poet contrasts the modern pampering of his compatriots with the courage of the inhabitants of the cities of Smyrna and Kolofon , who once defeated the Lydian ruler Giges .
Especially known are his elegy, addressed to the flutist Nanno; they are collected in two books named after her name. Mimnerm was the first to use elegiac distich for love poetry.
Mimnerm also owns a poem about the campaign of the Argonauts that has not been preserved to this day.
