The Vologda Oblast - a subject of the Russian Federation - was formed on September 23, 1937 as part of the RSFSR by the decree of the Central Executive Committee of the USSR “On the division of the Northern Oblast into the Vologda and Arkhangelsk Oblasts”. The administrative-territorial division of the Vologda region preserved the continuity from the abolished Northern region.

Areas and settlements
Babayev district
- Administrative Center - Babayevo
Babaevsky District was formed on August 1, 1927 as part of the Cherepovetsky District of the Leningrad Region . On September 23, 1937 the district was attached to the newly formed Vologda Oblast In 1959, the territory of the abolished Borisovo-Sudsky District was annexed to the Babayevsky District. From December 13, 1962, the district was enlarged - the Babayevsky rural area was formed, the territory of which included the territory of the former Babayevsky and Kadui administrative districts, and the city of Babayevo with a number of settlements was part of the Chagodoschensky industrial district, which existed until March 4, 1964. On January 12, 1965, the Babushkinsky and Kadui administrative districts were restored [8] .
Babayevsky municipal district was formed in the course of municipal reform , the boundaries of the district are determined by the law of the Vologda region No. 1105-OZ [9] . On the territory of the district, the results of changes to this law in April 2009, rural settlements were merged:
- Borisovskoye, Afanasovskoe , Novolukinskiy , Ploskovskoye , Novostarinskoye - to Borisovskoye with the center in the village of Borisovo-Sudskoe;
- Timoshinsky , Kuysky national Veppsky , Komonevsky - to Vepsian national;
- Saninskoe, Volkovskoe - in Saninskoe;
- Central, Top - to Central.
Given these changes in the territory of the municipal district, there are 11 more municipalities - 1 urban and 10 rural settlements:

Babushkinsky District
- Administrative Center - Babushkina Village
The initial name of the district is Ledengsky. Ledenga district was formed on July 15, 1929 as part of the Vologda district of the Northern Territory , with a center in the village of Ledenga. On July 30, 1931, the territory of the abolished Roslyatinsky District was annexed to the Ledeng District, but on January 25, 1935, the Roslyatinsky District was again restored. Since 1936, the district in the Northern Region . On September 23, 1937, the district became part of the newly formed Vologda Region. February 26, 1941 Ledeng district was renamed Babushkinsky, and the district center - in the village named Babushkina. On November 12, 1960, a part of the territory of the Roslyatinsky district, which was again abolished, was annexed to the Babushkinsky District. From December 13, 1962, the district was abolished (integrated), and its territory was transferred to the Totemsky rural district, the territory of which included the territory of the former Babushkinsky and Totemsky administrative districts. On January 12, 1965, the Babushkinsky and Totemsky administrative districts were restored. [8] [10]
Municipality Babushkinsky municipal district was formed during the municipal reform , the boundaries of the district are determined by the law of the Vologda region number 1106-OZ [11] .
The law of the Vologda region of April 8, 2009 No. 1986-OZ [12] transformed, through their union, the municipalities of Zhubryninsky rural settlement and Roslyatinsky rural settlement into the municipal formation of Roslyatinsky rural settlement with the administrative center in the village of Roslyatino .
The law of the Vologda region of June 1, 2015 No. 3667-OZ [13] , transformed, through their union, municipalities:
- Idskoye rural settlement , Minkovsky rural settlement and Yurkino rural settlement - to the rural settlement Minkovskoye with the administrative center in the village of Minkovo ;
- Logduz rural settlement and Podbolotnoe rural settlement - in the rural settlement of Podbolotnoe with the administrative center in the village of Koksharka .
The Law of the Vologda Oblast No. 3899-OZ of April 5, 2016 [14] transformed, through their unification, the Babushkinsky rural settlement and the Demyanovsky rural settlement into the rural settlement of Babushkinsky with the administrative center in the village of Babushkin .

Belozersky District
- Administrative center - the city of Belozersk
Belozersky District was formed on August 1, 1927 as part of the Cherepovetsky District of the Leningrad Region . In 1959 a part of the territory of the abolished Sholsky district was annexed to the Belozersky district. On September 23, 1937, the district became part of the newly formed Vologda Region. From December 13, 1962 , the district was enlarged - then Belozersky rural district was formed, the territory of which included the territory of the former Belozersky and Vashkinsky administrative districts. On January 12, 1965, the Belozersky and Vashkinsky administrative districts were restored. [8] .
The municipal entity Belozersk municipal district was formed during the municipal reform , the boundaries of the district are determined by the law of the Vologda region No. 1107-OZ [15] . On the territory of the district 12 municipalities were formed: one urban and 11 rural settlements.
By the law of the Vologda region of April 9, 2009 No. 1999-OZ [16] , the municipal formations were transformed, through their union:
- "Antushevskoye rural settlement" and " Bechevinskoe rural settlement " in the " Antushevskoe rural settlement " with the administrative center in the village Antushevo ;
- " Horodyshche rural settlement " and "Sholskoe rural settlement" in the " Sholskoe rural settlement " with the administrative center in the village of Zubovo .
By the law of the Vologda region of June 1, 2015 No. 3666-OZ [17] , the municipalities were transformed, through their union:
- " Antushevskoye rural settlement " and " Gulinskoe rural settlement " in the " rural settlement Antushevskoe " with the administrative center in the village Antushevo ;
- " Artyushinskoe rural settlement ", " Vizmenskoe rural settlement ", " Yeninskoe rural settlement " and " Paninskoe rural settlement " in the " rural settlement Artyushinskoe " with the administrative center in the village Artyushino .

Vashkinsky District

The Vashkinsky District was formed on August 1, 1927 as part of the Cherepovetsky District of the Leningrad Region . The municipality Vashkinsky municipal district was formed during the municipal reform , the boundaries of the district are determined by the law of the Vologda region No. 1108-OZ [18] .
By the law of the Vologda region of April 8, 2009 No. 1990-OZ [19] , the municipalities were transformed, through their unification:
- Andreevskoye and Ostrovskoye rural settlements - to Andreevskoye rural settlement with the administrative center in the village of Andreevskoye ;
- rural settlements of Lipinoborskoe and Ukhtomskoye - in the rural settlement of Lipinoborskoe with the administrative center in the village of Lipin Bor .
The law of the Vologda region of June 25, 2015 No. 3689-OZ [20] , transformed, through their union, municipalities:
- Andreevskoye, Vasilyevskoye , Ivanovskoye and Roksomskoye rural settlements - to the Andreevskoye rural settlement with the administrative center in the village of Andreevskaya ;
- rural settlements of Kisnemskoe, Konevskoye , Piksimovskoye , Pokrovskoye and Porechenskoye - to the rural settlement of Kisnemskoye with the administrative center in the village of Troitskoe .

Veliky Ustyug District
- Administrative center - the city of Great Ustyug
Veliky Ustyug district was formed in 1924 as part of the North Dvina province of the RSFSR . On February 27, 1928, the territory of the abolished Ust-Alekseevsky District was annexed to the Veliky Ustyug District. On July 15, 1929, the district of the North Dvinsk District of the Northern Territory . Since July 1930, the North Dvina District has been abolished. On January 25, 1935, the Ust-Alekseevsky District was restored. From December 5, 1936 to September 23, 1937, the district was part of the Northern Region , and then the district became part of the newly formed Vologda Region. In 1959, the territory of the re-abolished Ust-Alekseevsky district was annexed to the Veliky Ustyug district. From December 13, 1962 to January 12, 1965, the district was transformed into the Veliky Ustyug rural area. [8] .
The municipal formation of the Veliky Ustyug municipal district was formed during the municipal reform , the boundaries of the district are determined by the law of the Vologda region No. 1109-OZ [21] . On the territory of the district, the results of changes to this law in April 2009, the rural settlements of Pokrovskoye and Viktorovskoye were merged into Pokrovskoye. Taking into account these changes in the territory of the municipal district, 23 municipalities were formed - 3 urban and 20 rural settlements:

By the law of the Vologda Oblast of April 13, 2009 No. 2004-OZ [22] , the rural settlements of Viktorovskoye and Pokrovskoye were transformed, through their unification, into a rural settlement of Pokrovskoye with the administrative center in the village of Ilinskoe .
By the law of the Vologda Oblast of 4 June 2014 No. 3370-OZ [23], the rural settlements of Opokskoe and Strelenskoye were transformed, by uniting them, into the rural settlement of Opokskoe with the administrative center in the village of Poldarsa.
By the law of the Vologda Oblast of June 1, 2015 No. 3669-OZ [24], the rural settlements of Nizhnesharding and Tregubovsky were transformed, by their unification, into a rural settlement of Tregubovsky with the administrative center in the village of Morozovitsa .
The law of the Vologda region dated May 29, 2017 No. 4147-OZ [25] was transformed by combining them:
- Parfenovskoye , Pokrovskoye and Shemogodskoye rural settlements - to the rural settlement of Zarechnoye with the administrative center in the village of Aristovo;
- rural settlements of Mardengskoye and Nizhneerogodskoye - to the rural settlement of Mardengskoye with the administrative center in the village of Annunciation;
- Rural settlements Upper Vardharding and Ust-Alekseevskoe - in the rural settlement Ust-Alekseevskoye with the administrative center in the village Ust-Alekseevo.

By the law of the Vologda Oblast of June 25, 2015 No. 3693-OZ [27] , the rural settlements of Verkhovskoye and Olyushinskoe were transformed, through their unification, into a rural settlement of Verkhovskoe with the administrative center in the village of Smetanino .
By the Law of the Vologda Oblast of December 25, 2015 No. 3845-OZ [28] , the rural settlements of Klimushinsky , Naumovsky and Termengsky were transformed, by uniting them, into the rural settlement of Nizhne-Vazhskoe with the administrative center in the village of Naumikha .
By the law of the Vologda Oblast of April 10, 2017 No. 4127-OZ [29] , the rural settlements of Kolengskoye and Sibirskoye were transformed, through their unification, into a rural settlement of Kolengskoye with the administrative center in the village of Noginskaya.

Vojegodsky District

On the territory of the district 1 urban and 14 rural settlements were formed.
The law of the Vologda region of April 9, 2009 No. 1998-OZ [30] , the rural settlements were transformed through their unification:
- Ogibalovskoe , Tavenga and Tiginskoe - to the rural settlement Tiginskoe with the administrative center in the village of Gridino ;
- Beketovskoe, Lipino-Kalikinskoe and Punemskoye - to the rural settlement of Beketovskoye with the administrative center in the village of Beketovskaya ;
- Maryinskoe , Ramenskoye and Yavengskoye - to the rural settlement Yavengskoye with the administrative center in the village of Baza .
By the law of the Vologda Oblast of June 1, 2015 No. 3668-OZ [31] , through their unification, the municipal formations of the rural settlement of Mityukovsky and the rural settlement of Yuchkinskoe were transformed into the rural settlement of Yuchkinskoe with the administrative center in the village of Yuchka .

The law of the Vologda region of May 30, 2013 No. 3058-OZ [34] was transformed by combining them:
- rural settlements Megorskoe and Koshtugskoye - to the rural settlement Megorskoe with the administrative center in the village of Megra ;
- rural settlements Devyatinskoe and Yanishevskoye - to the rural settlement Devyatinskoe with the administrative center in the village Devyatiny .
By the law of the Vologda region of November 2, 2016 No. 4042-OZ [35] were transformed by combining them:
- Andomskoye and Saminskoe rural settlements - to the Andomskoye rural settlement with the administrative center in the village of Andomsky Pohost ;
- Megorskoe , Kazakovskoye and Oshtinskoye rural settlements - to the rural settlement of Oshtinskoye with the administrative center in the village of Megra .

On September 20, 1931, the territory of the abolished Abakanovsky District was annexed to the Kadui District. September 23, 1937 the district is attached to the newly formed Vologda region. By the law of the Vologda region of April 8, 2019 No. 4525-OZ [61] , the rural settlements of Nikolskoye and Yurochenskoye were transformed, through their unification, into a rural settlement of Nikolskoye with the administrative center in the village of Progress .
By the Law of the Vologda Oblast of June 11, 2019 No. 4547-OZ [62] , the urban settlement of Chebsar will be transformed from January 1, 2020 into a rural settlement.

- 1960 - Myakinsky, Roslyatinsky and Ust-Kubinsky districts are abolished.
- 1962 - Babushkinsky, Vashkinsky, Kaduysky, Kubeno-Ozersky, Nyuksensky, Syamzhensky, Chagodoschensky and Chebsarsky areas are abolished.
- 1965 - Babushkinsky , Vashkinsky , Kaduysky , Nyuksensky , Syamzhensky , Ust-Kubinsky , Chagodoschensky and Sheksna districts are formed.
