Content
Story
The coronation of Empress Wu Zetian is in jeopardy due to the mysterious deaths of officials that occurred as a result of spontaneous combustion in the sun. To investigate this case, the Empress rescues Detective Dee from prison, whom she herself put there seven years ago for organizing several uprisings against her, because she believed that a woman should not be on the throne [4] .
Production
Prior to the shooting of the film, Cui Hark studied for three years the history of the Tang dynasty and the personality of Di Renjie; the idea itself was submitted by screenwriter Chen Guofu [5] . The beginning of the filming was announced in 2008 at the 13th Busan International Film Festival [6] .

Detective Dee was a joint production of the Chinese company Huayi Brothers and Film Workshop studios. The film was a 50 m production project Film Workshop [8] .

Commenting on the selection of the actor for the lead role, Cui Hark said: “Who said that Di Renjie should be fat and old? It should look beautiful. Wisdom and appearance must be balanced. ” [10] . On January 5, 2009, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Andy Lau was approved for the lead role in the film [4] .

- Andy Lau - Di Renjie, a detective exile during the Tang dynasty [11] . In order to prepare for the shooting, Lau studied criminal psychology [7] .
- Carina Lau - Wu Zetian , Empress of China. During the press conference, the actress noted that she considers the image of the empress to be tragic; she has to be “superhuman”, possess enormous strength of mind and wisdom to make ambiguous decisions [8] . For the filming of the film, Lau had to take riding lessons and get rid of his fear of horses [7] .

Shooting
Filming began in May 2009. The project budget amounted to 13 million dollars [4] [12] . Filming took place in Zhejiang Province , at the studio Hengdian World Studios , which is one of the largest film studios in the world [13] . Sammo Hung was engaged in staging crowd scenes and fights [7] [14] .
Proceedings
In 2013 came the prequel of the Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon [15] .
