President Eduardo Frei Montalva ( Spanish Presidente Eduardo Frei Montalva ) is the most important Chilean research station in Antarctica . Opened in 1969 as a meteorological base, the modern name - since 1990 .

Located on the island of Waterloo (King George) , 2.5 km from the Chinese station " Changcheng " and 960 km from Cape Horn .
The station is located on an ice-free surface, at an altitude of 10 meters above sea level, 200 meters from the Russian Bellingshausen station. Also nearby are the stations: General Artigas ( Uruguay ), King Sejong ( Republic of Korea ), Jubani ( Argentina ), Comandante Ferras ( Brazil ), Henryk Arztowski ( Poland ) and Machu Picchu ( Peru ). Further south, on the island of Leipzig (Nelson), is the station Eco-Nelson (Eco-Nelson, Czech Republic ). 50 kilometers from the station, on Greenwich Island , is the Chilean station Captain Arturo Prat .
The station has a runway of 1300 meters in length, which serves all neighboring stations.
In summer, up to 150 people work at the station; in winter, about 80 people remain.
