Gene Roddenberry was born on August 19, 1921 in the city of El Paso ( USA ) in the family of Edward Roddenberry and Carolina Glen ^[5] . When he was not yet two years old, he and his family moved to Los Angeles .

After graduating from school, following the example of his father, he began to study as a policeman , while obtaining a pilot's license. In 1941 , after the Japanese air raid on Pearl Harbor , Jin was drafted into the US Army, the Air Force . He served in the Air Force from 1941 to 1945 on a B-17 bomber ^[5] . During the war, he made 89 sorties, received the rank of lieutenant and awards for outstanding services.

After the war, Gene got a job as a co-pilot at Pan American Airlines. After a plane crash in 1947, he decided to abandon his career as a pilot and got a job in the Los Angeles police , where he served from 1949 to 1956 ^[5] .

Roddenberry was twice married. First wife - Eileen Rexroat - his school friend. The second is Mejel Barrett , an actress whom he met on the set of Star Trek.

Gene Roddenberry passed away on October 24, 1991. ^[5] According to his will, his ashes , together with the ashes of another 23 space pioneers and enthusiasts, were launched in 1997 in a special capsule into space on a Pegasus rocket ^[5] .

In the 1950s, Gene Roddenberry worked as a screenwriter on American television and took part in the series “Have Gun - Will Travel” and other series, and also acted as the producer of the series “The Lieutenant” . He signed his first scripts with the pseudonym Robert Wesley .

The idea of ​​creating a science fiction show at Roddenberry appeared in 1964 . The idea of ​​a new series was proposed to the CBS channel, but the contract proposed to him was unsuccessful, and Gene offered his services to NBC . In the same year, Gene wrote the script and produced a pilot episode called "The Cell" with Jeffrey Hunter as captain Christopher Pike . Gene contacted the scriptwriters he knew and offered the company three new scripts, one of which was approved. A little later, the filming of the new pilot series began. In addition to the original series, Gene Roddenberry is the creator of the second epic series - Star Trek: The Next Generation , which began work on it in 1985 (the series was released in 1987). After Gene died in 1991, work on the series continued with Rick Berman .

In addition to working on TV shows, Roddenberry has authored the feature film Star Trek: The Film (1979).

After Roddenberry's death, Star Trek was not forgotten. The Star Trek: The Next Generation series (the last episode was released in 1994) was completed, and subsequently 4 more television series were released.

On the basis of Star Trek, another 12 feature films were also shot. Six of them - during the life of Gene. The last film shot during his lifetime is Star Trek VI: Undiscovered Country.
