Gamal Mubarak was educated at the American University of Cairo in the field of business. He worked at Bank of America , participated in the founding of a financial company in the UK.

In 2000, he entered the secretariat of the ruling National Democratic Party ; in 2002, he was appointed head of the party’s political committee. In the same year, rumors appeared that Gamal could replace his father as president [1] . In September 2010, because of rumors that Gamal had already been appointed successor to his sick father, protests against this scenario took place in Cairo [2] . Gamal Mubarak was seen as one of the possible presidential candidates from the NDP in the 2011 presidential election . Nevertheless, it was expected that the 83-year-old Hosni Mubarak would once again run for the NDP [3] . Earlier (in 2004), Gamal indirectly renounced taking up the presidency, publicly announcing the rejection of the principle of inheritance of power [4] . Experts expected that if Gamal Mubarak really takes over as his father, he will have to face the resistance of the "old guard", the " Muslim Brotherhood " and the Bedouins [5] .

In 2007, he married Hadige El Gammal, the daughter of an Egyptian businessman.

In January 2011, during the unrest in Egypt, he left the country and flew to London [6] . On February 3, Egypt's Vice President Omar Suleiman confirmed that Gamal Mubarak would not participate in the election [7] .
