Geography
The department is located in the western part of Nicaragua, south of it lies Lake Managua . The area of the department is 5138.03 km². The population is 404,471 people [1] (2012 census). The population density is 78.72 people / km². The administrative center is the city of Leon .
It borders in the north with the department of Esteli , in the west with the department of Chinandega , in the east with the departments of Managua and Matagalpa .
