History

In 1949, the Krasnaya Zvezda kennel received a state order for breeding guard dogs for service in any climatic conditions of the USSR. Requirements were made: frost resistance (thick, long hair), physical strength, long limbs (for fast running) with wide paws (not to fall into the snow), powerful jaws and teeth, ferocity, but not to the detriment of trainability.

The work began with a mass breeding, that is, interbreeding of existing breeds of different breeds ( East European Shepherd x Newfoundland ; Saint Bernard x Caucasian Shepherd ; German Dog x East European Shepherd; Newfoundland Caucasian Shepherd; Riesenschnauzer x Erdelteraer ; led to the creation of several breed groups. Special attention was paid to such official breeds as a giant schnauzer, Airedale and Rottweiler, and then also Newfoundland and others. From these breeds a new breed group was born - the black terrier . The forefather of the breed was the Giant Schnauzer Roy (Zorab x Lady).

In the 1950s, the kennel began to transfer puppies and adult dogs to amateur breeders. In 1957, at the All-Union exhibition of service and hunting dogs in Moscow, 43 black terriers were shown. By the end of the 1970s, more than 800 black terrier dung were received, the total number of puppies that met the requirements exceeded 4,000. Since the early 1980s, black terriers began to exhibit at major international exhibitions, where they enjoyed tremendous success.

In 1981, Order No. 19 of the General Directorate for Nature Protection, on the recommendation of the canine council, approves the Standard of the Breed "Russian Black Terrier" (BRT). The breed "Russian Black Terrier" was registered by FCI under the number 327 September 29, 1983. On November 13, 2010, FCI adopted a new edition of the RFT standard.

Description

The black terrier is a dog above average height, strong-boned, unpretentious to the conditions of detention, resistant to colds, responds well to various types of training. Currently, the Russian black terrier has spread throughout the country and has established itself as one of the best service breeds. This is an active participant in competitions for virtually all official types of dog training: the general course of dog training, protective guard and guard service, a city dog, a Russian ring, and so on.

The black terrier is perfectly trained. But keep in mind that this dog is not for sitting on the chain of a private cottage. The black terrier first of all requires constant communication with the owner, the family in which he lives.

General view

The black terrier is a large athletically folded dog, of a slightly extended format, of a strong, rough type. It has a massive bone structure, strong muscles. Harmonious. It has a large head, compact, voluminous and deep body. Sexual dimorphism is clearly pronounced.

Size and weight

Desired height at withers:

  • Males: 72-76 cm, but not less than 70 cm and not more than 78 cm.
  • Bitches: 68-72 cm, but not less than 66 cm and not more than 74 cm.

Higher growth is allowed provided that the proportions and the correct breed type are maintained. Weight: males 50-60 kg, females 45-50 kg.

Dental system

The teeth are large, white, tight to each other, complete with dental formula (42 teeth). The incisors of the lower jaw are located in one line. Scissor bite.

Eyes

The eyes are medium in size, oval in shape, straight and wide set, dark. The eyelids are dry, tight and black.

Tail

Thick at the base, set high. In motion, the tail is held vigorously, but at the base it should not be directed towards the head (“rabbit” tail).

The tail is traditionally docked in the country of origin. The uncropped tail, as well as its length and shape, do not affect the assessment of the dog. Preference is given to saber or sickle tail.

Coat

Coarse and thick double wool. Consists of a thick coarse dense guard hair with a break and a softer and shorter thick undercoat. Ostev hair covers the whole body, in its natural state its length is from 5 to 15 cm. A well-developed adorning hair forms abundantly developed “eyebrows”, “mustaches” and “beard” on the head. The front and rear limbs are covered with a long thick adorning hair.

Grooming is required in the prescribed form. The dog after grooming should look strong and self-confident, without excessive decoration due to excessively left wool. Long hair is left on the limbs and on the face. Haircut should emphasize the massiveness of the head, flat forehead, properly hanging ears, a strong neck and the correct structure of a powerful body.

The color is black, black is allowed with an insignificant gray (no more than 1/3 of the total color surface).

Movements

The movements are free and well-balanced, the joints of the limbs flex and unbend freely. A typical gait is an energetic, sweeping lynx due to a strong push of the hindquarters and a significant wiggle of the forelimbs. The back in motion remains strong and, together with the loin, slightly spring.

Behavior and Temperament

The Black Terrier is a dog with great dignity, self-confident, well-managed in any situation. If necessary, he immediately takes an active defensive position, but quickly calms down when the danger disappears. The RCT is handsome and charming, hardy, unpretentious, smart and friendly. Easily adapts to different climatic conditions, well trained, efficient, reliable. [one]

  • hip dysplasia
  • elbow dysplasia
  • hyperuricosuria
  • juvenile paralysis of the larynx and polyneuropathy

Other diseases:

  • eye diseases (entropion, ectropion, conjunctivitis)

Work and sport with a black terrier

The Russian Black Terrier is one of the popular breeds in the Russian service and departmental cynology. This dog should receive regular physical and mental stress. Black terriers are poorly suited for the quiet life of a companion dog and need training appropriate to their purpose.

Most often, sports dog handlers perform with RFT in such disciplines as: General course of training, Protective Guard Service, Russian Ring, Big Ring, IGP, obidiens. Departmental cynologists also use Russian black terriers to search for drugs and explosives, to arrest and escort violators, guard, border guards and the protection of territories. [2]
