Geography

The department is located in central Nicaragua, on the eastern shore of Lake Nicaragua . The area of ​​the department is 4176.68 km². The population is 174,682 people [1] (2012 census). The population density is 41.82 people / km². The administrative center is the city of Boaco .

It borders in the north with the department of Matagalpa , in the west with the departments of Managua and Granada , in the south with the department of Chontales , in the north-east with the South Atlantic region .

History

It was formed in 1938 from part of the Chontales department.

Administratively, the Boaco Department is divided into 6 municipalities:
