Geography
The department is located in the western part of the country, on the shores of Lake Managua . In the southwest it is washed by the waters of the Pacific Ocean . The area of the department is 3465.10 km². The population is 1,448,271 people [1] (2012 census). The population density is 417.96 people / km², which makes it the most populated department of Nicaragua after the department of Masai . The administrative center - the city of Managua - is also the capital of the country.
It borders in the north with the department of Matagalpa , in the west with the department of Leon , in the east with the departments of Caraso , Granada , Masaya and Boaco .
