Features
One of the main advantages of distributing Slax is its ease of configuration. Additional software can be added and removed using Slax modules. A traditional package manager, such as APT from Debian, is not required to download additional software. Slax modules are fully autonomous. However, APT is fully supported. Users can also change the default CD image or install a USB drive to configure packages available in the distribution package at boot time. Slax also allows you to convert Debian packages to Slax modules.
Slax modules are compressed read-only images of the SquashFS file system, which are compressed by the LZMA compressor. Various modules are stacked together to create a complete Slax root directory. An additional rewritable layer (tmpfs file system) is placed on the top of the stack to implement the write function.
The complex file system of choice was changed between versions Slax 5 ( UnionFS ) and 6 ( aufs ), as well as the extension of the module file name (changed from .mo to .sb).
Version History
Early Slax releases prior to Slax 3 were known as Slackware-Live [2] .
The latest version of Slax is version 9.6.4 [1]
Slax 5
There were five editions of Slax 5:
- Slax Standard was standard for normal use.
- Slax KillBill included Wine , DOSBox , and QEMU to run DOS and Microsoft Windows applications .
- Slax Server provided additional Internet features and came pre-configured with DNS , DHCP , Samba , HTTP , FTP , MySQL , SMTP , POP3 , IMAP and SSH , and several other server applications.
- Slax Popcorn was a minimalist edition focused on viewing and playing multimedia . In this edition, Mozilla Firefox is the default web browser , and Xfce is a lightweight shell as a desktop environment instead of KDE .
- Slax Frodo was released as bare bones, providing only a full-featured text environment, especially targeting computers with a small amount of RAM .
Fluxbox Window Manager has been a window manager in all publications except Frodo [3] [4] [5] [6] .
Slax 6
Slax 6 is offered in one version, and fully uses modules (additional packages) for additional functions. Starting with version 6, the modules are based on LZMA compression, but some compatibility was initially provided between the legacy .mo modules used by Slax version 5 and the later .lzm modules of version 6. Since there were some changes between versions of the Linux kernel during the release of sub versions of Slax 6, however .mo modules from Slax 5 are now deprecated. Each module or package must be compiled for compatibility with the Linux kernel used [7] [8] .
Slax 7
Slax version 7 was announced on the developer's blog (which is now integrated into the recently updated Slax site). Slax 7 supports both 64-bit and 32-bit architectures, and, according to its download page, "is available in more than 50 languages." It is also equipped with a stripped-down version of KDE 4 , new wallpapers, and a new modular system [9] [10] .
Slax 9
In November 2017, the developer announced the release of version 9. This version is heavily rewritten, and based on Debian , also uses APT to add packages. The standard builds (both 32-bit and 64-bit) contain the FluxBox window manager with a terminal, the Chromium web browser , the Leafpad text editor , the Qalculate !, calculator, the pcmanfm file manager , and the wicd network manager [11] [12] .
