STS-105 - space flight MTKK Discovery under the Space Shuttle program (106th flight of the program and 30th flight for Discovery [2] ). The main objectives of STS-105 were to deliver the third long-term crew (ISS-3) to the International Space Station (11th shuttle flight to the ISS [3] ) and return the second crew ( ISS-2 ) to Earth . In addition, consumables [4] and retrofitting of the Destini laboratory module [5] were delivered.

Crew
The STS-105 crew (the appointment was officially announced by NASA on December 1, 2000 [6] ) consisted of 7 astronauts, four of whom were the shuttle crew, and three were the ISS crew (different at launch and return) [7] :
- (NASA) : Scott Horowitz (4) [8] - commander;
- (NASA) : Frederick Sterkow (2) - pilot;
- (NASA) : Patrick Forrester (1) - Flight 1 Specialist;
- (NASA) : Daniel Barry (3) - Flight 2 Specialist, Flight Engineer .
Launch crew
The tasks of STS-105 were to deliver the crew of the 3rd long-term expedition to the ISS:
- (NASA) : Frank Culbertson (3) - flight 3 specialist, ISS commander;
- (FCA) : Vladimir Dezhurov (2) - flight-4 specialist, ISS pilot.
- (FCA) : Mikhail Tyurin (1) - flight 5 specialist, ISS flight engineer .
Although the delivery and return of the ISS-3 crew was planned by shuttles, Culbertson's crew was prepared for the emergency return to Soyuz . In this connection, in addition to the distribution of duties in the crews of the shuttle (flight specialists) and the ISS, there were positions in the Soyuz crew: Dezhurov - the commander of the TK, Tyurin - flight engineer-1 of the TK, Kalbertson - flight engineer-2 of the TK [2] .
Startup backup crew [9] :
- (FCA) : Valery Korzun (2) - flight 3 specialist, ISS commander;
- (FCA) : Sergey Treschev (1) - flight-4 specialist, ISS pilot;
- (NASA) : Peggy Witson (1) - Flight 5 Specialist, Flight Engineer.
Return crew
The tasks of STS-105 were to deliver the crew of the 2nd long-term expedition to Earth :
- (NASA) : James Voss (5) - flight 3 specialist, ISS flight engineer;
- (NASA) : Susan Helms (5) - Flight 4 Specialist, ISS Flight Engineer;
- (FCA) : Yuri Usachev (4) - flight 5 specialist, ISS commander;
Flight Options
- Apparatus weight
- at the start - 116,914 kg ;
- when landing - 100 824 kg ;
- Payload - 9 072 kg ;
- Orbital inclination - 51.6 °;
- The circulation period is 92.3 minutes ;
- Perigee - 373 km;
- Apogee - 402 km.
Spacewalks
During the flight of STS-105, two spacewalks were carried out, both by NASA astronauts Patrick Forrester and Daniel Barry [5] .
- August 16 from 13:58 to 20:14 ( UTC ), duration 6 hours 16 minutes. Installation on the section of the farm P6 block EAS with a supply of ammonia ; transfer and installation of two PEC containers on the Quest lock chamber [2] .
- August 18 from 13:42 to 19:11 ( UTC ), duration 5 hours 29 minutes. Installation of OIH handrails (from the English Orbit-Installed Handrail ) on the surface of the Destiny module; laying along them two LTA power cables (from the English Launch-to-Activation Heater ) for installing the S0 truss section in flight STS-110 [2] .
Emblem STs-105
The author of the STS-105 emblem is NASA astronaut, the mission participant is Patrick Forrester [10] . The emblem shows the main mission of the flight, namely, the crew change to the ISS: three golden stars near the take-off orbital ship symbolize the crew of the 3rd main expedition , and two stars near the descending shuttle - the crew of the 2nd main expedition returning to Earth . The plume of flames behind each shuttle is styled with the flags of the USA and the Russian Federation (depending on whose astronaut is the expedition commander: American Calbertson on the ISS-3 and Russian Usachev on the ISS-2). The circle formed by two (going into orbit and returning to Earth) spacecraft reflects the rotation of the ISS crews and their constant presence in orbit [2] .
A star with three rays crossing the emblem is a symbol of the NASA astronauts office and personifies the inextricable link between the Earth and the International Space Station. Two spacecraft - entering orbit and returning to Earth - form a circle reflecting the rotation of the crews on the ISS and their constant presence in orbit. The names of the four astronauts of the Discovery crew are placed around the emblem, and the names of the ISS crew members are placed on the chevron below the emblem [10] .
