The name of the river comes from the Norwegian word ( Norwegian. Anger ) - “deep bay” and originally refers to the estuary [4] .

The sources of the river are in the Scandinavian mountains in the southern part of Swedish Lapland (in the Lena Westerbotten ) on the border with Norway . It flows to the southeast, along the territory of the province of Ongermanland ( Westernorrland County ), and then flows into the Gulf of Bothnia of the Baltic Sea near the town of .

Ongermanelven in its course forms a series of lakes and significant waterfalls . About a hundred kilometers upstream from the estuary, the river is navigable for small vessels. The water flow rate of water in winter is more than 300 m³ / s, during the spring flood it usually reaches 2000 m³ / s. Ongermanelven has one of the most regulated drains among the rivers of Sweden: since the 1930s, more than 40 dams have been built here, and 15% of the total capacity of the country's hydroelectric power stations are generated at power plants [4] .

The riverbanks are extremely beautiful and therefore many tourists come here.

Due to the fact that the river basin during the postglacial epoch experienced glacioisostatic uplift, ancient delta deposits up to 8000 years old were available for study in the river valley, which made it possible to establish the absolute age of the Swedish geochronological scale [4] .
