The service allows users to send messages. At StatusNet, these were only text messages up to 140 characters long with some processing of image links; [ clarify ] with the transition to pump.io appeared support for formatting with pictures.
StatusNet
Being a StatusNet server, Identi.ca was similar to Twitter in both concept and aspects of work, but provided many features that currently have no equivalent on Twitter, including support for the XMPP protocol (formerly known as Jabber) and a personal tag cloud . Additionally, Identi.ca allows free export and exchange of information, both personal and about friends, based on the FOAF standard; This makes it possible to redirect messages to a Twitter account or other similar service, or to port to a closed-access service, for example, Yammer .
More than 8,000 registrations and 19,000 status changes occurred in the first 24 hours after the opening of public registration [2] on July 2, 2008 [3] , the milestone of 1,000,000 was broken on November 4, 2008 [4] . In January 2009, Identi.ca received a venture capital investment from the Montreal Group. [five]
March 30, 2009. Control Yourself (from now on, this company is called StatusNetInc) announces that Identi.ca should become part of a microblogging service called status.net, which should be launched in May 2009. Status.net offers customized microblogging services on third-level domains selected by the customer. Identi.ca remains a free service. All messages are published by default under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license. Customers paying for hosting can choose another license [6] .
pump.io
In July 2013, the Identi.ca service switched from StatusNet to the new pump.io platform. [7]
Registration is stopped, the organization of its servers is recommended (the creation of new servers on StatusNet “Status.Net” was also stopped; the popularity of these services was seen as an obstacle to the spread of decentralization); [8] the mention of the CC BY license in the “basement” of the page has disappeared.
Interface (web application) Identi.ca is an ordinary client to pump.io.
As a result of the software change, there was support for text formatting in messages, the page with popular entries, [9] support for groups [10] and hashtags [11] disappeared that were not implemented in pump.io.
