Gesta hungarorum

The first page of the manuscript

Gesta Hungarorum ( Acts of the Hungarians ) is a historical work in Latin containing information about the early history of the Hungarians . The author of the work is unknown: in the text he refers to himself as Belae Regis Notarius (notary of King Bela), but, as a rule, is referred to in the literature simply as Anonymous . The anonymous author, allegedly, studied at the Sorbonne and at the time of writing the chronicle served as a notary (scribe) in the curia of the Hungarian king Bela III (1172–1196) [1] . The chronicle was probably written between 1196 and 1203 [2] , although some scholars claim that the author wrote the chronicle earlier, in the XII century. “Acts of the Hungarians” has been preserved in the manuscript of about 1200, and it was published for the first time in 1746. A monument to the author of “Acts of the Hungarians”, Anonymous in monastic clothes with a face covered with a hood, is installed in the Vaidahunyad castle in the Budapest Varoshliget park.
