History
The Academy de la Grand Chaumiere is located in Paris on Montparnasse , in the VI city district , at the address: st. Grand Chaumiere 14 (14 rue de la Grande Chaumière) . It was founded in 1904 by the Spanish artist Claudio Castelucho [1] (according to other sources - Swiss artist Marta Stettler [2] ). Since 1909, the Academy was headed by Martha Stettler herself, her friend Alice Dannenberg and the French artist Lucien Simon . In 1945, Stettler died. Since 1957, the Academy is led by representatives of the Charpentier family [3] .
Like other private art academies of that time, Grand-Chaumiere contrasted itself with academic educational institutions and cultivated the spirit of free creativity [4] . Mostly foreigners studied there, including women [5] .
Nowadays, the Academy is an open-type art school, which means that it does not have a specific educational course designed for several years. Students can sign up for classes for several months, weeks, and even days, attend studios hourly, and practice painting and drawing at the Academy with or without the help of the teaching staff [6] . Especially popular are the so-called evening “Croquis à cinq minutes” , during which the posing model changes its position every 5 minutes. Due to the open nature of the Academy, it has practically no archival data, especially regarding students making short-term visits to the Academy.
