City History

Asia Minor in the 15th Century

The first mention of it dates back to the times of the Hittite kingdom of Artsav (mid II millennium BC. E. ). Later the city was part of Phrygia , Lydia , was ruled by the successors of Alexander the Great , the Romans and the Byzantines . At these times, the city was called Akroin [5] . In 739, one of the invading Arab armies was destroyed here by the Byzantines under the personal leadership of Tsar Leo Isaur and his son Constantine. At the beginning of the XIII century it was part of the Koni Sultanate . In the local fortress, the Seljuk sultans kept their treasury, and therefore the city received the name "Hisar-i Devle" (Sovereign's Castle). The city passed from the rulers of Germian to the Ottoman authorities, who originally called it “Karahisar-i Sahib” (City of the Black Fortress), referring to the Seljuk fortress made of black stone, which rises 235 meters above the city.

In 1912, Turks lived here - 75,406 people, Armenians - 4,812 people, Greeks - 1,200 people. [6]

In 1921, one of the battles of the Greek-Turkish war took place here.

City Name

The city received its new name Afyon (in Turkish - opium ) because in its vicinity they grow opium poppy , which is necessary for the preparation of medicinal preparations.
