Introduction of banknotes in 1991

The 200 ruble bill was put into circulation in the USSR in the fall of 1991. During this period, Yegor Gaidar , seeing the inevitability of a serious inflation surge after the liberalization of prices planned for the beginning of 1992, sought to prepare for the need for additional money supply. He invited the general director of Goznak Leonid Alekseev for a meeting and instructed him to prepare banknotes with face values of 200 and 500 rubles. Having accepted the instructions of Gaidar for execution, Alekseev soon faced opposition from the Supreme Council in the person of its chairman Ruslan Khasbulatov , who demanded that such issues be resolved at his level [2] .

The process of issuing new banknotes was apparently slowed down. But in circulation they nevertheless appeared. And in January 1992, after a sharp inflation jump, even in the discussions in the Supreme Council it was no longer a question of issuing banknotes of 200 or 500 rubles, but of banknotes of 1000 and 10 000 rubles [3] .

Introduction of banknotes in 2017

On April 12, 2016, the Bank of Russia announced the introduction into circulation of new banknotes with a face value of 200 rubles. The text of the statement stated that the appearance of these banknotes will simplify monetary operations and will not affect the total amount of money in circulation. New banknotes will be introduced due to the withdrawal of old ones. The Central Bank stressed that the adoption of this decision is due to the planned reduction of inflation to 4-6% by the end of 2016.

From June to October 2016, a nationwide competition was held to determine the symbol of new banknotes, which was won by the Monument to the flooded ships in Sevastopol and the view of Tauride Chersonesos [4] [5] . The presentation of banknotes took place on October 12, 2017, on the same day they were put into circulation [6] .

When creating banknotes issued in 2017 in 200 rubles and 2000 rubles , the font was Segoe Ui from Microsoft [7] . A banknote of 200 rubles has a lacquer coating [8] .

Since October 17, 2017, the National Bank of Ukraine has prohibited operations with this banknote in banks, other financial institutions and post offices in Ukraine . This prohibition also applies to a commemorative banknote with a face value of 100 rubles issued in 2015, dedicated to the admission of the Republic of Crimea to the Russian Federation and the formation of Sevastopol’s Republic of Crimea and the federal city in the Russian Federation, as well as Bank of Russia commemorative coins dedicated to the Crimea and Sevastopol [9] [10] [11] .
