Biography
He was born in the family of the writer Ivan Petrovich Sokalsky [1] . He graduated from the music school of the department of the Imperial Russian Musical Community in Kharkov , where he studied music with Peter Petrovich Sokalsky [2] , and composition from I. R. Knorr . 05/31/1885 he graduated from the Faculty of Law of Kharkov University , after which he served in Kharkov in the judicial department. He performed as a concertmaster , was the conductor of the orchestra in the opera enterprise of V.N. Andreev-Burlak . Since 1882, he was the music reviewer of the newspaper "Southern Land", published under the pseudonym Don Diez. At the meetings of the Kharkov branch of the Russian Musical Society , his works were performed, and the opera "Turnip" was performed in Poltava , Smolensk , Tiflis and Kharkov . In 1902 he was a prosecutor at the Ust-Medvedetsky District Court. [3] From 10.10. He lived in Vologda in 1911 , served as chairman of the Vologda District Court until 1918 . In 1918 , in Vologda, he, along with his daughter Lydia (04/07/1892 -) and son-in-law Ilya Ginetsinsky, gave several lectures and concerts on the works of Beethoven and Grieg . In 1919 , he went on vacation to Sevastopol , but, having contracted typhus, he died. He was married to Susanna Stanislavovna Baranovskaya (1874-?).
Memory
- The grave in the city cemetery in Sevastopol was found by composer M.V. Kovalev , the monument was created by architect N. N. Sdobnyakov [4] . On gray granite, lyre and inscription: composer V.I. Sokalsky.
- In Kharkov there is a music school named after the composer.
