History

The Brooklyn Botanical Garden was founded in 1910, but the first land for it, covering an area of 39 acres, was reserved as early as 1897. The first director was Dr. Charles Stuart Gager . A special educational program for children and a kindergarten ( Children's Garden ) began to operate in 1914, and the Japanese kindergarten ( Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden , architect ) opened in 1915. In 1916, the Rock Garden was founded [1] .

To maintain all the functions of the garden in 1917, special laboratory buildings ( Laboratory Building and Conservatory , now used as the Administrative Building and the Palm Greenhouse - Palm House ) began to operate. In 1925, thirty-two potted bonsai trees were donated to the garden, marking the beginning of their modern collection. In the same year, the Shakespeare Garden opens, a gift from Henry C. Folger . In 1939, the Osborne Garden opened, a donation from Mrs. Sade Elisabeth Osborne . In 1945, the first book in the gardening series was published: Lilies and Their Culture . In 1955, the Fragrance Garden (designer and architect Alice R. Ireys ) was founded [1] .

In 1980, a gift was received from the city of Tokyo : the 500-year-old Shogun lantern stone lantern, which was installed in the Japanese Garden. In 1652, Japanese feudal lord Kami Nobuteru installed this 3-ton stone lantern 10 feet high in honor of the Tokugawa shogunate . The gift was dedicated to the twentieth anniversary of the establishment of twinning relations between New York and Tokyo. In 1989, the construction of the Education Center and the renovation of the Palm House were completed . In 1992, the Rock Garden was renovated, and on the Montgomery Street (109 Montgomery Street ) a Science Center was opened. At the same time, the Garden presented the first award for achievements in the field of environmental protection ( Better Earth Award ). In 1996, the Discovery Garden was opened and the official website of the Brooklyn Botanical Garden - bbg.org [1] was launched.

In 2000, the Center for Urban Restoration Ecology (CURE ) was founded together with Rutgers University and the BBG Florilegium was founded. In 2002, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden became the office for BGCI ( US office of Botanic Garden Conservation International ). The Brooklyn Academy of Science and the Environment , BASE, was established in 2003. In 2010, the Garden celebrated its 100th anniversary [1] .
