Story
The story unfolds around one of the newcomers to the full Space Marines of the Order of the Ultramarines - Battle Brother Proteus. He and several other Space Marines had just been initiated into the Adeptus Astartes full Space Marines and formed the Ultima strike detachment under the command of the Captain of the 2nd Company of Severius and Apothecary of Pifol. Space marines swear an oath on the sacred relic of Rota - an ancient thunder hammer, called the Hammer of Macragg , pronouncing the battle cry of the detachment: "We fight for Macragg, and we do not know fear!"
The first task of the Ultima squad is the Sacred Planet Mitron, where the Temple of the Emperor is under the protection of Space Marines of the 5th Company of the Order of Imperial Fists. Upon arrival on the planet, Proteus senses something inexplicable, as if the enemies were watching him and his comrades. The only one who believes Proteus is the apothecary Pitholus, who took the lights of St. Elm on the banner of the order carried by the soldiers for an unkind sign. Captain Severius rejects all suspicions and orders to follow forward.
On the way to the castle, where the surviving Imperial Fists allegedly took refuge, the Ultramarines meet the battlefield defiled by Chaos, and then encounter the Black Legion fighters - the once Space Marines of the Moonwolf Legion, corrupted by Chaos and become apostates after the Horus Heresy. Having lost several fighters, the Ultramarines still get to the castle, where the alarm comes from. There, they encounter the immense power of the Demon of Chaos of the Indivisible, which, almost ignoring the heavy fire of a dozen bolters and the blows of a chain sword, grabs Captain Severius and breaks into the abyss with him. Now Proteus commands the squad, since he is the only one who reminded the Ultramarines of their duty to find the source of the signal and find survivors.
In one of the premises of the castle Ultramarines find the only two Imperial Fists who survived from the 5th Company - Brother Nidon, the guardian of the shrine, and Chaplain Karnak. They explain that they were guarding the sacred book Liber Mitrus , which was once handed over to the Fists by the God Emperor of Mankind, for which the forces of Chaos now arrived, but cannot explain how they themselves managed to survive in a temple more than a month ago captured by demons. Proteus decides to pick up the book and take it to Macragg, the home planet and the Ultramarine Monastery Fortress. When retreating, the Space Marines are subjected to a massive attack by the Black Legion; during the battle, the wounded captain Severius appears and leads his squad for a breakthrough. The landing ship "Storm Hawk" shells the landing site, and then picks up the surviving paratroopers on the Assault Cruiser.
On board the Attack Cruiser, Proteus informs Severius and Pytholus of his suspicions about the inexplicable salvation of the two Imperial Fists and their somewhat strange behavior. The captain and Proteus immediately went to the armory, where the Fists were located, to check what kind of book they brought with them. But, having opened it, he and the rest of the space marines see that the pages are empty. Fists admit that their nervousness was caused precisely by the disappearance of inscriptions in the shrine, the fear that the corruption of Chaos had affected it. However, the Captain accuses Kulakov of heresy; the banner of the detachment brought by the newcomer, the standard bearer, on which the lights of Saint Elm reappeared, also exerts a reinforcing effect. Severius kills Karnak and stuns Nidon. However, the newcomer Ultramarine notes with surprise that even after the murder of the heretic psyker, the lights did not disappear. Having weakened, the Captain breaks off, beats the Ultramarines, and then grabbing Proteus by the throat says that they had long planned an attack on Mitron in order to lure the space marines to save the shrine, and Karnak and Nidon were needed only as a distracting maneuver. The standard bearer who has come to himself pushes the possessed Captain out of the weaponry, but dies. Proteus, Nidon and Verenor run along the corridors and see the seriously wounded Pytholus, who says that the demon is in the relic of the Shock Cruiser.
The ship is preparing to jump into the Warp with a demon on board. Surviving Space Marines find the demon in the Reliquary Hall, where the Hammer of Macragga stands. The demon, assuming his true guise, uses the forces of Chaos to “manifest” the texts of prayers on the pages of the book, which is the Gate of the Warp. There is very little time left before the ship leaves for Macragg; the demon kills almost all the paratroopers and takes Proteus captive, intending to take on his appearance instead of the uncovered mask of Severus, seducing the paratrooper with promises of honor and glory. While preparing the ritual, the demon mockingly thanks Proteus for involuntary assistance in the implementation of his plan - to destroy the whole Rota Kulakov, leaving a couple of fighters alive to get the Ultramarines who came to the aid with the portal book and opening the gate to the Warp, to call from there reinforcements to destroy with them one of the best orders of the Space Marine, and with it to conquer the most powerful stronghold of the Imperium in the Ultima Segmentum, occupying more than half of the galaxy. However, Pifol, who came to the rescue at the cost of his life, gives Proteus time to take the Hammer of Macragg and give a worthy rebuff to the Demon. Proteus grabs the sacred hammer and slams the demon with it, destroying his body and expelling the soul to Warp, and the portal book disappears with it. Proteus realizes that he allowed the demon to enter the ship and disturbed the peace of the holy relic, but Verenor assures him that the Order will find out the whole truth about what happened.
Time passes. Proteus and Verenor, already Veterans-Sergeants of the Order, receive converts of paratroopers in the relics of Shock Cruiser. Like Severus, Proteus praises the Hammer of Macragg above his head, pronouncing the battle cry of the Ultima squad: “We fight for Macragg, and we do not know fear!” Ultramarines are waiting for new battles for the glory of the Emperor.
